Fun Activities to do With Grandkids

by Liz Thibodeau

Having grandchildren can be an amazing experience, and an opportunity to have a “do-over” without the same responsibilities we had when playing with our own children - oh, so long ago! As the “Mimi” to six littles (the oldest, Eloise, is sitting next to me as I write this), ranging in ages of 18 months to eight years old, I’ve learned a few tricks along the way. I try to plan one day each summer that I call “Mimi Camp” to give their parents a break and give me some time alone with the kids. These activities are easy to prepare, can be done at home or in the Annapolis area, and are budget-friendly. What’s more, they are “Ellie Approved” ideas that grown-ups will also love. All of the photos courtesy of myself, Liz, featuring my amazing grandchildren!

Go to a State Park We love going to Quiet Waters or Sandy Point State Parks for picnics, playing ball games, hiking, scootering, scavenger hunts, and more. I buy an annual state park pass for $75, get a sticker for my car, and we can go to any park whenever we want! Last summer we spent the morning of Mimi Camp on the trails at Quiet Waters. I packed a cooler of cold drinks, granola bars, scooters, and toys and we had a ball! Kids love using their own imagination, so it didn’t take long before they were all scootering ahead on their own version of a nature scavenger hunt.

MIMI TIP: Dress for exercise! I got all my steps in early that day!
