The Motherlode Fall 2024

THINGS TO CONSIDER Like most professions, it takes dedication and work to become a successful barber. To become a licensed barber in Maryland, you “must submit proof of completion of 1,200 hours of barber student training in a barber school or 2,250 hours as a registered apprentice in a licensed barbershop and qualify by examination given by the Board.” Additionally, many barbers spend long hours on their feet and capturing content to promote their services. Indeed notes communication, time management, dexterity, active listening, and attention to detail as essential skills as well. The Associated Barber College also reports that in some cultures, a child’s first haircut is a rite of passage, and “in others, specific hairstyles symbolize social or marital status, religious affiliation, or profession.” This further corroborates the indispensability of barbers and their positive impact on people’s lives. Barbering being a lasting need also means flexibility for barbers themselves. Professionals can join an existing barbershop, start their own shop, or travel to clients, and often make their own schedule and pricing. This offers an opportunity to make a healthy income and build clientele at a comfortable pace.
