Letter From the Publisher
CHANGE
It’s a word that often makes us pause, perhaps even recoil, as we consider what it might mean for our lives. We like our routines, our familiar places, and the comfort of knowing what tomorrow holds. But what if I told you that change, even when it’s unexpected or difficult, can be a gift in disguise? This month, while editing this issue of The Motherlode , I found myself reflecting on the many seasons of change I’ve walked through—some welcomed, others forced upon me. Each one brought its share of uncertainty, but also new opportunities for growth, creativity, and connection. When I became a mother, I feared losing the independence I had cherished. Instead, I discovered depths of love and resilience I never imagined. When I moved back to Annapolis and switched careers TWICE, I was terrified of starting over. However, it led me to a place where I could use my voice and passions in ways that mattered. Change has a way of reshaping us—sometimes gently, sometimes like a storm. It teaches us what we’re capable of, reveals what truly matters, and pushes us to dream bigger. It’s a reminder that we are always evolving, always learning. And while it can be uncomfortable, it often opens doors we didn’t even know were waiting for us. So, as you turn the pages of this issue, I invite you to think about the changes in your life. What have they taught you? How have they helped you grow? Let’s embrace the unknown with courage and a sense of possibility. This could be as simple as trying the activities or food you read about in this magazine. You may discover new things about our amazing town that inspire you! Change isn’t just inevitable—it’s a force for renewal and transformation. And who knows? Your next chapter might just be your best one yet. Warmly,

Teen Summer Slide Prevention: 6 Ways to Stay Sharp Year Round
by Jillian Amodio, LMSW
Let’s be real, summer should be fun! We all remember that sense of freedom we felt as the final bell of the school year signaled our long-awaited freedom. Lazy days and late nights filled with ice cream, beach trips, bonfires, and hanging out with friends are a must. But let’s get honest about something else, too. The relaxing pace of summer can make it difficult for teens to get back into the swing of things come September. However, we can prevent the summer slide! So, what is a summer slide? It refers to the learning loss that many students experience while taking a three-month hiatus from structure and education. Summer should be fun, but it should be balanced fun. Keeping your teen’s mind in shape doesn’t have to look like summer school. It can look like summer cool. Learning doesn’t have to be homework and lectures. Learning can look like play! Here’s a list of local opportunities to keep teens engaged, entertained, and educated this summer:
1. AACPL’S SUMMER @ YOUR LIBRARY PROGRAM
Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) offers its annual Summer @ Your Library initiative, which promotes learning throughout the summer by encouraging all ages to read and attend educational programs for prizes. New this year is the Choose Your Own Adventure for teens. Participants can read or do activities to earn points and win prizes. One lucky winner will win a Nintendo Switch OLED edition! Visit aacpl.net/summer for more information. 2. ENROLL IN A COURSE AT ANNE ARUNDEL COMMUNITY COLLEGE (AACC) AACC is not just for high-school grads. Teens can explore classes on campus through Kids in College. This year’s personal enrichment classes include: • Roblox Coders • Beats and Jams: Digital Music Creators

Volunteering offers teens hands-on experiences to foster growth and enrichment, while teaching life skills and providing valuable experiences
executive functioning skills. Maryland Hall offers a variety of summer classes focused on Media Arts. Classes in the Media Arts Hub include Photoshop, audio book narration, film study, and other digital arts. Summer classes include Digital Mindful Art: A Creative Pause For Your Mind, Song Writing & Song Production, and Summer Short: Films for Ages 16+. 6. KEEP EDUCATION FRESH IN THE MIND For students who might benefit from continued support in math, tutoring can be a low-stress way to ensure that learned concepts stay fresh in mind and are not forgotten over summer break. For teens who are planning to take the SAT and ACT, summer help can be invaluable! Mathnasium and Sylvan Learning of Crofton provide SAT and ACT prep classes designed to equip students with conceptual understanding and long-term retention. These 12-week and 8-week courses include expert instruction utilizing authentic practice tests to build familiarity and accuracy. For additional tutoring services and extra- curricular activities, check out our “Homeschooling & Enrichment Resources” lists in the April edition of The Motherlode. TO SUMMARIZE Summer doesn’t have to be a total break from growth and learning. It can be a balanced mix of education and entertainment. Learning is not something only done in the classroom. It’s happening all the time!
that make their resumes shine! Teens can polish communication skills, learn leadership techniques, and practice time-management skills, all while giving back to their community and doing things they enjoy! Local options include food banks, animal shelters, community centers, hospitals, libraries, Annapolis Maritime Museum, Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC), SPCA of Anne Arundel County, and assisted living facilities. Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks has unique opportunities for teens to serve as counselors in training. Their youth volunteer programs allow middle and high- school-aged youth to volunteer in various ways. Visit aacounty.org/recreation-parks/volunteers for more information. 4. GET BOARD… WITH GAMES! Board games, card games, and other strategy-based games like chess, as well as story-driven games like Dungeons & Dragons, offer engaging ways to keep the brain active. Problem-solving and executive functioning skills can be practiced while playing games with friends. Local library branches host chess clubs on a regular basis. Organizations like Silver Knights Chess Academy host summer camps at Anne Arundel County schools, as well as online chess camps for youth up to age 13. Token MTG in Annapolis and Games and Stuff in Glen Burnie often host community events, tournaments, game nights, and social groups. 5. MEDIA ARTS AT MARYLAND HALL Art and media enrich and engage the mind in creative ways that enhance critical thinking, problem-solving, and

Hitting the Trail: 6 Places to Hike in Anne Arundel County
by Tyler Ingle
Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary - This nature preserve on the Patuxent River is perfect for birdwatchers and nature lovers alike. Trails take you through tidal marshes, forests, and boardwalks. The sanctuary is also part of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, leaving it full of educational value and rich biodiversity. Kinder Farm Park - Nestled in Severna Park, Kinder Farm Park offers many outdoor opportunities, most notably for its loop, spanning just over two miles. Twisted through nature, this trail encompasses a farm featuring goats, pigs, chickens, and more. In addition to the animals, the park holds two turf fields and several other multi-purpose fields. Hiking is the perfect way to spend time outdoors this summer because it’s one of the simplest and most rewarding ways to recharge—physically, mentally, and even emotionally. The warm weather and longer days make it the perfect time to get outside, soak up some sunshine, and breathe in fresh air.
Hiking is more than just a way to explore the outdoors— it’s a powerful tool for improving both physical and mental health. Whether you're tackling a challenging trail or taking a leisurely walk through a local park, hiking helps build strength, boost cardiovascular health, and increase flexibility. Time spent in nature has also been shown to reduce stress, ease symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improve overall mood. In a fast-paced world filled with screens and schedules, stepping onto a trail offers a much-needed reset for the mind and body. Anne Arundel County has a variety of parks and hiking trails that are perfect for all skill levels, from family- friendly strolls to challenging slopes. Here are six great places to check out if you're looking to explore the outdoors this summer: Quiet Waters Park - Known for its scenic trails by the water, this park hosts roughly six miles of walkable paths, all of which are moderately level and accessible to people of all ages. The paved and natural surfaces wind through
forests along the South River. The park features a beautiful waterfront area, dog beach, art galleries, picnic spots, and even kayak rentals in warmer months. It's great for both families and solo adventurers. Baltimore & Annapolis (B&A) Trail - This long path of 13.1 miles is ideal for biking, running, and walking. It stretches from Glen Burnie to Annapolis, passing through several communities and offering shady, tree-lined sections. Along the way, you’ll find rest areas, playgrounds, and historical markers. It’s also a great commuting route for locals who prefer a greener way to travel. Sandy Point State Park - With the shortest paths of them all, Sandy Point is best known for its beach and views of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, with a few short trails that loop around the park’s wooded areas and ponds. While it’s not a hiking destination per se, it’s perfect if you’re looking for a walk with
Patuxent Research Pond. Photo Courtesy of Jody Arneson, Mid Atlantic Day Trips.
Whether you're looking to get in shape, clear your head, or just break out of your usual routine, hiking offers a low-cost escape with high-impact benefits. Plus, it’s a great way to reconnect with nature, discover new local spots, and even spend quality time with friends or family, without distractions.
great views and the option to picnic or swim afterward. Patuxent Research Refuge - Located just outside the county line, this refuge offers serene hikes through woodlands, wetlands, and meadows. Wildlife is abundant here, including deer, turtles, birds, and more. The North Tract, its most popular trail, allows hiking, biking, and even fishing in designated areas.

Life Skill: Swimming - It’s Never too Late to Learn
by Stacey Coles
For Anne Arundel County Firefighter Brian Holtslander, it’s “exasperating” how close drowning victims typically are to the search area, but how difficult it still can be to find them. He remembers the night a tide washed up a victim’s body in the area emergency personnel had been searching since that afternoon. It was a child with special needs who had gone off a pier that afternoon. The scream of the victim’s sister upon the recovery still lingers in Brian’s mind. “Drownings…are some of the, you know, most tragic things, you know, to be a part of,” Brian explained. “You know you give 100%, but you know sometimes the circumstances are going to be beyond your control. But learning to swim is something that's absolutely within the control of everyone [with access].” The Anne Arundel County Fire Department told Annapolis Moms Media that between January 2024 to May 2025, it responded to 10 drowning-related calls, with one fatality. Anne Arundel County has the most shoreline in Maryland, so it’s no surprise that a lot of activities and good times take place around water, especially in the summer. This makes swimming an even more critical skill for residents, especially for children and young males who are often the victims. It’s never too late to learn how to swim. If you’re the hesitant one in your family, taking adult beginner lessons can set an empowering example for your child and boost your own water confidence at the same time. Here are three things to consider if you’re hesitant: 1. Knowing how to swim equips you to be self- sufficient and a lifeline for others Swimming is a vital life skill that can prevent tragedy. Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in children, and it often happens silently and within seconds. Teaching your child to swim gives them the tools to stay calm and survive in an emergency. But the responsibility doesn’t stop with them. As a parent, knowing how to swim yourself means you’re better prepared to protect your family around pools, lakes, or beaches. It also sets a powerful example: water safety is for everyone. Whether you're guiding your toddler in the shallow end or watching over older kids, your own swimming ability adds another layer of security. 2. An Experienced Instructor is Key to Success Not every swim class is created equal, especially for beginners or nervous swimmers. The right instructor
will take time to build trust, move at your child’s pace, and make the experience positive and fun. Look for lessons led by certified swim professionals focused on water safety and emotional comfort. A patient, experienced instructor can ease fears, correct poor habits, and help your child (or you) feel proud of every step forward. 3. Controlled Exposure Improves Comfort and Confidence It’s okay if you or your child are naturally nervous around water. The key is slow, steady exposure in a safe environment. Start with shallow water and gradually increase to more challenging depths. But remember to celebrate those small wins along the way. As comfort grows, so will skills. With each positive experience—whether it’s blowing bubbles or floating on your back— swimming ability, resilience, and self-trust are being built. And while you’re upping your swim game, so are our county’s firefighters. Thanks to an expansion of county policy, first responders can now enter the water to attempt a rescue or serve as a marker for drowning victims until dive professionals arrive. As a result of this change, the county has rolled out a rescue swimmer class to train emergency responders. Paul Rakowski is a part of the county’s Special Operations Unit and is one of the teachers for the course. For locals, he warns against swimming alone and recommends that families use life vests when participating in local recreational activities, noting that signs of drowning aren’t as obvious as what we see in films. “There's a lot of videos online of just at the the local pool, the community pool where the kid slides in the water, does a little bit of splashing. Everyone thinks they're playing. And next thing you know, the head goes back and then underwater,” he explained. “It's a very passive event, so you need to have eyes on kids, especially the younger they are because they happen like that.“ Whether you’re signing your child up for swim lessons or brushing up on your own skills, water safety starts at home—and it starts now. With local emergency responders stepping up their training to better protect our community, it’s the perfect time for families to do the same. Because when it comes to drowning, every second matters and being prepared can mean the difference between a close call and a tragic loss.

Air Signs GEMINI, LIBRA, AQUARIUS FOCUS: ENERGY FLOWS WHERE INTENTION GOES
Air Signs Over the next few months, you may feel at the beck and call of circumstances out of your control. It might feel like the passionate focus on your own journey and creative self-expression takes a back seat compared to the other things you're tending to. There is a difference between supporting others because you want to and feeling like you have to at your own expense. Remember, you don’t have to be drawn into the drama or suffering of others. You’re capable of seeing the truth, deciphering what deserves your attention, and trailblazing forward. Fire Signs You have the gift of imagining wonderful worlds of light. You can dream up so many possibilities. Now is the time to turn those ingenious ideas into something more. Let the next few months be a reminder that your inspired ideas are worth bringing to life. Don’t stress about how all the details will come together. Trust that you will be provided with all you need to take the next step. The Universe loves a bold spirit! Earth Signs Now is the time for you to let life happen in a completely unreserved and unscripted way. It might feel awkward at first, but this is a sign that you’re breaking away from your self-imposed conventions and trying something new. Use this as an opportunity to strengthen your inner voice and creative projects. Stay on your path, enjoy the journey, and remember to take nothing too seriously. It will all work out as it should. Water Signs In every transitional process, there is a time of vulnerability. This is natural. It allows room for the old way of thinking to be released while fresh new perspectives creep in. Now is the time to pay attention to the new life emerging around you. Whether this is a new job, friendship, or pathway to self-discovery, only allow those proven to be trustworthy to support you in this step forward. This will give you the peace of mind needed to embrace your new life while lovingly denouncing any intrusion upon it by doubt, fear, or sabotage.
