The Power of Annapolis Moms: The Case of the Stolen Truck

by Heather Greenwell

When I think of the term community, the word strength naturally comes to mind. As parents and individuals, we all need others to lean on and support us when times get hard. The Annapolis Moms Facebook Group has been that resource for many in Anne Arundel County. This was the case for Lisa Jordan Wheeler and her family when her son, Logan, had his truck stolen. On the evening of March 6, her son’s 2002 Ford F-350 was stolen from their driveway. It was discovered to be a part of a targeted theft ring out of DC. Many people across the country have also experienced similar situations, as Ford 7.3L diesel trucks have been frequently stolen due to their popularity and value overseas. The morning after the incident occurred, Lisa posted about the incident on the Annapolis Moms Facebook page. “I posted in the group because I knew [it] was the quickest way to get the picture out there," Lisa explained. "We had several people reach out with heartfelt messages and many who shared our post on their pages." With over 26K group members, support reaches far and wide throughout our region. It was a loud response for Lisa's son, who had been working on the truck with his father since he was 16. One of the group members who reached out to Lisa was a police officer who worked in DC. The officer ran the license

plates and found that the truck had been scanned in DC at around 1:35 am. "She even went as far as going over to the tow yards, where a lot of the stolen trucks end up, to look for the truck," Lisa said. “Without Annapolis Moms, I would have never spoken to the police officer. I would probably still be looking all over our area for it.” Although her son’s truck was never located, Lisa is thankful that the members of the Annapolis Moms Facebook Group helped her family. Since vehicle theft appears to be on the rise, local police advised her to place an AirTag in her vehicles to help with tracking and monitoring. “We didn’t get the ending we wanted, but having the support of the group made it a lot easier to navigate,” Lisa explained. “The helping hands definitely allowed me and my son to feel gratitude despite what happened.” Strong relationships, active participation, good leadership, a sense of belonging, and a focus on collective well-being are all key components of strength within a community. Throughout the years, we have had that here at Annapolis Moms. The truth is, there’s not always a perfect ending to every challenge, but a supportive community can make those times easier to navigate.
