Capsule Wardrobes:
How to Do More With Less
by Gianna Nucci
Capsule wardrobes have recently become popular as people move away from consumerism, desire a more streamlined closet, and want to get dressed effortlessly. Being able to create a nice variety of looks with 30 to 50 pieces is the ultimate goal. The first step when embracing a capsule wardrobe is to determine a color palette. While most capsules lean toward neutral colors to maximize versatility, it’s fine to incorporate a few accent colors that feel authentic to you. The same goes for prints. Traditional prints – stripes, polka dots, and plaids – are often seen in capsules, but if an animal or floral print feels more you, then go for it. Keep in mind these should be treated as complements to the rest of your closet, versus making up the majority of it. After you’ve identified a palette, consider your lifestyle and the climate you reside in. There’s a lot of information on what a capsule wardrobe looks like, but you want to ensure the pieces you’re selecting support you. Another key focus when building a capsule wardrobe is quality over quantity.

Since you’re paring down your clothing items, you’ll wear them a lot more and need them to stand the test of time. Focus on quality fabrics and good construction. As a stylist, here are my recommendations for building a capsule wardrobe: Bottoms I suggest keeping your bottom collection neutral. Include a variety of jean washes along with white, beige, and black options in trousers, skirts, and shorts. Feel free to add in a few fun options like faux leather or statement print pants. Outside of workout clothes, I would include a few athleisure options like a twill jogger and elevated leggings for more casual days. Where to Shop: Scout & Molly’s Tops Prioritize basics like t-shirts and tank tops in neutral colors so you can layer them effortlessly. For dressier looks, opt for a few silk camisoles and shells. There are a lot of top styles, so you really want to consider your personal style here.
