OVER 300 CAMPS TO CHOOSE FROM GUIDES

UPDATED WEEKLY!

2024

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Thirteen years ago, I started the Annapolis Moms Facebook group. I invited all 12 of my preschool mom friends to join and explained that they had to pretend they didn’t know each other. We needed to populate the group with content to show other members how it worked. I told my good friend and soon to be co-admin, Jessica Opert, to comment on a post I would make about summer camps. I wrote, “What is everyone doing for summer camp?” Jessica dutifully responded with, “You know what we are doing, Scott is going to summer camp with Lulu!” We still laugh about that today and how far we have come! To this day, around Christmas time, Annapolis Moms is flooded with camp posts at a fevered pitch which doesn’t relent until the last week of August. This year, Jeff Peri, my husband and partner in crime, devoted 100’s of hours to assemble the Mother of All Camp Guides so you don’t have to! There are over 300 camps with descriptions, contacts, and websites. You will see familiar camps and some new ones too! The guide is interactive so you can phone/call directly from the guide or go to the website with a quick click. You can also search by category for types of camps. We will be updating our Camp Guide on a weekly basis so you will always know which camps have availability (to the best of our knowledge). When a camp is full, it will be marked FULL so there is no guessing!

As we were assembling this beast of a guide, it got me back to thinking of my own childhood in Pines on the Severn in Arnold. I saw an old photo that was taken by Kirk Thompson in 1978, when our neighborhood would have all of the kids wrestle to pull out a greased watermelon from the river. None of us remember what the prize was, because it really didn’t matter. In the photo you can see smiling kids that I am still friends with, one being my sister, Erica Dolgoff! Wonderful lifelong memories were made every summer! Camp and summer are magical in the Annapolis Area. We hope this guide makes planning less stressful so that you and your family can enjoy the summer fully!

Pines on the Severn Delivered the Summer Camp Experience

By Erik Arneson, Special Guest Contributor

There is a heartfelt reason Stephen King’s classic Stand By Me is my favorite movie.

Pals walking along a railroad track, taking on multiple adventures and challenges along the way and sharing conversations that felt incredibly meaningful in the moment always serves as a signature summer memory from my youth in the waterfront community of Pines on the Severn. Between the ages of five and 14, I was blessed to live and make lifelong friends in what felt like one big summer camp. The Baltimore & Annapolis Railroad ran across the entrance of “the Pines” until the summer of 1968, when the Severn River Trestle, the “Old Train Bridge” as we knew it, was declared unsafe. When our family moved into 116 Severn Way in 1969, the tracks served as little more than a shortcut to “the Little Store,” a small butcher and grocery shop that occupied a former train depot and offered a great selection of nickel candy – Gold Rush bubblegum pouches, Wild Cherry Lifesavers and Marathon candy bars were a few of my favorites. The walk along the tracks, however short, always came with a sense of childhood curiosity – from pulling railroad spikes from rotting timbers, to collecting coal chunks scattered around the tracks to swinging from tree vines out over ravines, it was never a simple point A to point B stroll. And minus the horseback riding, anything that was going on at any summer camp in the area was happening in the Pines, usually on a grander scale and most-definitely without camp counselors.

Fishing for white perch, walking through shoreline grasses in search of elusive soft crabs, or simply playing a game of tag with friends at the Pines beach described so many summer days in the Pines, but there was so much more! Community softball games on Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day between dads and their teenage sons – complete with hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill and a bake sale benefitting the community swim team – were staples of every Pines summer. AM transistor radios – where we heard that Elvis had died while we were playing tackle football at the playground (“the field” as it was known) and 45’s served as our soundtrack. The neighborhood was surrounded on both sides of Severn Way by what felt like endless wooded property owned by “Mr. Rucker” and “Commander Berry.” Fearless exploring, tree climbing, fort building, BB gun wars (we didn’t shoot our eyes out, but we came close a few times) and searching for box turtles were daily activities. Walking though marshy areas near the waterline often meant coming home with only one shoe; the other lost to the muck. While walking around the neighborhood was easy enough, unless you were barefoot on the hot asphalt, our chosen modes of transportation were more commonly bikes and skateboards – in the skateboard era that enjoyed the evolution from metal roller skate wheels to better-performing urethane wheels. Sims Pure Juice were the ultimate. Some version of Schwinn Stingrays from nearby Pete’s Cycle was common to see stacked at the beach or playground, but the stars of the show were bikes we built ourselves, refurbishing old frames, polishing the chrome and often sawing front forks off multiple old frames and jamming them together to create “choppers.”

The community beach and a pool shared by multiple neighborhoods both offered summer swim teams, the beach team competing against other neighborhoods along the Severn River. If you weren’t lucky enough to own a boat, someone you knew did. We jumped, dove off or swung from nearly everything we could find – boat houses, pilings, piers and even the concrete pilings under the Severn River Bridge.

Anything for an adventure.

My Mom, who passed away last year, used to tell folks she “always knew where we were.” No. No you didn’t, Mom. Mostly because from sun-up to the time the streetlights came on, we didn’t even know where we’d end up. I’m closing in on 60 years old, but still drive through the neighborhood when I am in town, often stopping to shoot a few baskets. As a kid, I bounced my nearly bald Voit basketball to that court so many times, counting down and pretending to score the game-winning shot every time before leaving it. I still do that before leaving.

A magnificent summer camp it was.

(Writer Erik Arneson, whose latest book, The Life of Paula Murphy – The Fastest Woman on Wheels, was published in October, lived in Pines on the Severn with his family from 1969 to 1979, returning to live in the community as an adult with his

wife, Sandy, and kids from 1994 to 1999.)

How to Know When Your Kid is Ready for Sleepaway Camp By Chelsea Harrison

Sleepaway camp is a right of passage- but how do you know when your child is ready for that epic experience? With so many amazing camp opportunities in this area, the question might come up sooner than you think!

Here are some things to consider if your kiddo is starting to ask about sleepaway camps for Summer 2024!:

1. Interest and Enthusiasm: Are your kids asking about sleepaway camp? Are their friends going or have already been? If your child is curious about the camp experience, it's a positive sign. 2. Independence and Self-Reliance: Kids who are comfortable with tasks like making their bed, packing their bag, and managing personal hygiene are often better equipped to handle the responsibilities of camp life. If your child has been gradually taking on more responsibilities at home and showing a sense of autonomy, it may be a sign they are ready for independence.

4. Ability to Communicate Needs: Can your child ask for what they need? Kids should be able to articulate their needs, express themselves to camp counselors, and seek help when necessary. In an uncomfortable situation, would they be able to approach an adult and ask for help? If you think they might be more likely to call you in a desperate state or stew in miserable silence, perhaps wait or at least make sure to have this conversation about communicating their needs before they go. 5. Getting Outside their Bubble: Camp often involves trying new activities, meeting new people, and adapting to unfamiliar environments. Camp may involve challenges and disappointments, like drama with roommates or not loving the lunch choices. Can your child be resilient in these situations without their safety bubble close at hand?

3. Successful Overnight Stays: Has your child spent nights away from home before? With family or a sleepover with friends? Before committing to sleepaway camp, consider their track record of overnights away. Were these outings successful (minimal anxiety, phone calls home, following the house rules, etc.)? TIP: If you’re considering sleepaway camp, maybe schedule some overnights at friends’ and family members’ to test out how it goes before registering for sleepaway camp.
