MAKEUP TRENDS FOR 2024 BY DUFFY PERKINS
For those of us who want to update our makeup bags this year, turning to TikTok influencers and YouTube tutorials may be more of a rabbit hole than we necessarily need. To get the skinny on what trends will be hot in 2024, we spoke to Master Makeup Artist and Varuna Salon Spa manager Brittany North . “Just like the fashion industry, makeup goes back and forth,” she advises. North believes that the pendulum will swing toward a full coverage face that still exudes the ‘clean girl look’ of 2023. “I think we’re going into a full matte season soon, but we’ll maintain the fresh and clean looks that we built upon in 2023.” To get this for yourself, start with a skincare regimen that borders on obsessive. “The better your skin looks, the better your makeup will look on you,” says North. Take time to hydrate and
moisturize. North recommends Aveeda’s skincare line, as it will deliver the most bang for your buck. A more wallet- friendly option exists within The Ordinary line, which is available at Ulta. “The moisturizer is only $13, and it’s unreal,” says North. Next, look for a tinted moisturizer. “These are vital for the ‘fresh and clean’ look,” says North. North recommends Smashbox and Charlotte Tillbury for top-end brands, but also believes very strongly in Maybelline SuperStay 24-Skin Tint. “It has Vitamin C in it, and it comes in a dropper. I don’t know what magic is in that bottle, but my skin looks so beautiful after using it. It gives a great glow, and doesn’t flake or cake up on me.” Speaking of caking up, now is the time to rethink our concealer. “A lot of concealers will crease, and that makes you look older than you are,” North says. The products North keeps in her kit at all times are the Smashbox Halo concealer, and NYX “Bare With Me.” “Both are amazing,” she says.
To complete the look, North recommends a little mascara and some cream blush to get a dewy glow. A bold lip, classic red or more muted, will bring the game home. But hold up before you glue on a big strip of lashes.
“I would predict that lashes are going to go back to being more natural,” she says, recommending cluster lashes over the lengthy strips. North cites the tendency of brows to become more refined and shaped than they have been in the last five years as the catalyst for this change. “But I think there might be an amp up – maybe a metallic eyeshadow, or an emphasis on the liner.” Whatever the overall trends are, the general consensus is that you shouldn’t have to spend half an hour getting the look you want. “It takes only five minutes, it looks effortless, and you’ll feel better about yourself when you walk out the door.”
That’s absolutely a trend we can get behind.
