Take a little risk (for once) and make the leap! You have a loving family and a fantastic community; people will support you, especially when you’re providing best practice and care that stems from the heart. “ - Kaitlin Barry, OT

I would tell my younger self not to be so concerned with separating the profession from who you are as a woman. I work in a male-dominated field, and that can be complicated. It can be tempting to believe I can’t be feminine; I must conform more to the group. You must feel confident when you’re a leader and need to make difficult decisions. Sometimes, that confidence comes from a great skirt, beautiful nail polish, or just having your hair done. Hopefully, that will make for a better leader and more consequential decisions.
Don’t fear failure. When you make a mistake or encounter a challenge, embrace it as an opportunity to grow. “ - Samara L. Firebaugh, PhD Academic Dean and Provost, United States Naval Academy

“
I always wanted to run my own practice because I wanted the freedom to innovate in my profession, to make a positive impact the way I wanted to, and to have control over my work. I was pregnant when I made the leap and did not yet know what motherhood would require of me. I am SO incredibly grateful that I decided to start my own business, I could do the things I initially wanted and I could have the flexibility in my schedule to be there for my children.

I would tell myself to make goals and plans, but also realize things may change, and that’s OK. I’d also tell myself to never quit on a bad day.
My first time running [for office] was to run for state senate. I have three girls, and it was really important for me to set a good example to them of strong woman leadership. My husband is also retired Army. So public service is something that’s just always been important to us and to our family. And I knew he was retiring soon and we’d be able to have that time in order for me to do that. And so I made the decision to run and to serve my community.
