The Motherlode Spring 2024: Women at the Helm

If I have a stack of resumes on my desk and one of them says stay-at-home mom returning to the workforce, she’s getting an interview, because stay- at-home moms are brave women used to doing invisible work for what they believe in. With a little autonomy and recognition they are unstoppable.

A man demanded I sign a non-compete. I refused. Having been victimized by one in the past, it was THE perfect time to take full control of my future! I packed my things and an hour after walking out of his office, Frances Marketing was born! We just celebrated our 7th birthday in February!

I would tell my younger self to invest in myself through education, take risks creating investment opportunities, to take a deep breath and enjoy the ride.

- Dr. Marlene Niefeld, MD Owner, K&B True Value

I leapt from performer to arts leader because I saw how to use my skills to lift up other artists in a challenging industry.

It’s important to find your passion and pursue adventurous and exciting things that truly excite you. The more you do what you love, the more you’ll enjoy it, the better you’ll become, and the more enthusiasm you’ll have to share with others, including the sailors you’ll eventually meet. Get ready to express gratitude by writing lots of thank you notes, as you’ll encounter many incredible people along the way who will provide you with enlightened leadership, friendship, and good wishes.

What made me take the leap? Well, I wanted to be of service. And at the end of the day, I get to help people and solve big problems for the community every single day in the state senate.

- Vice Adm. Yvette M. Davids Superintendent, United States Naval Academy

- Sarah Elfreth Maryland State Senator, District 30
