The Motherlode Spring 2024: Women at the Helm

I am constantly looking for new challenges and opportunities to grow. As a woman in cybersecurity, I work very hard to pave the way for more women in the field. I knew that competing in the Miss Maryland program would push me to improve my public speaking skills and connect with a diverse audience; skills that are less common in the cybersecurity field. Through countless speaking engagements, appearances out of my comfort zone, and placing Top 10 at Miss America during my year as Miss Maryland, I have certainly gotten the push I needed.

Lean into your fear. Fear isn’t always a bad thing ... it feels uncomfortable. Being uncomfortable is where the magic happens; it’s where you find growth and your truest self. The world needs your gifts, so lean into the fear and shine.

At the time I decided to open Creative Force Dance Center, I was struggling to find an environment in the dance community that I wanted for my own children– a place where they felt safe and nurtured while learning the art of dance. Having a business degree already, I decided to open my own dance studio where I could create the environment I wanted. It has truly been a labor of love where many members of my family and chosen family work, dance, and thrive. “

Being a women is never easy, especially when you’re a minority. I decided to take the leap because I wanted to become a roll model not only for my kids, but for every kid everywhere. I always say dream big and never give up.

No matter how hard you plan, there will always be curve balls, so remember to be flexible and have confidence that everything will work out.

Be afraid NOT to get started on your dreams. Don’t be scared to talk to those around you and seek wise counsel. In doing so, you can avoid pitfalls, and gain greater purpose in your dreams. Find something that you are not only passionate about but that can help others around you. “ - Sanovia Peterson Owner, Memories on Wayberry Consignment
