The Motherlode Spring 2024: Women at the Helm

I am super excited because this is 20 years since Crownsville State Hospital was closed. Since then, I have been working to identify the names of the people in the cemetery at the state hospital; there are no names on the grave markers, only numbers. ... I started an organization called Friends of the Crownsville Patient Cemetery. And we, myself and a bunch of volunteers, found the names of every person buried there. There are 1727 people buried there, from 26 states in the US, Africa, Cuba, Santo Domingo, and England. We are proud of our work.

I would hug her...I would cup her face in my hands and kiss her forehead, then turn her to face the mirror. I’d tell her to take a deep look at this person, take the time to get to know her because she is the person to please – no one else. This person will be the one who will be by your side through life’s ups and downs. She will be the one with you when you make life’s difficult choices.... If the girl in the mirror can look you in the eye and say you did your best, then you’re in for a wonderful ride being you.

It was a leap of faith. I jumped into a new position and industry during what equated to a complete shutdown of travel and tourism. I took the helm of an organization that had suffered a public crisis in leadership and nearly lost its funding and the public trust. Our organization—and the industry as a whole— has been resilient and

Tangled Balloons was less of a leap and more of an evolution. I was party planning for myself, then for friends, then for clients. Many new and exciting things are happening for us, from building our clientele to developing a new space within Annapolis. I think getting our footprint out there and establishing an inclusive community has been exciting for us. Whether it’s within our office with our new or current patients or even networking and partnering with other local small businesses in the area, it’s really exciting for us to be part of a community around the downtown Annapolis area.

Probably the same advice I still need. Don’t be afraid of failure. It is in failure that you truly learn.
