The Motherlode Spring 2024: Women at the Helm

Upcoming Rams Head Shows for Music Lovers By Laura Price

From an early age, listening to music was magic for me. I learned how to play my grandmother’s antique piano when I was six years old and continued lessons throughout high school. As a teenager, I would listen to the radio non- stop, a cassette tape all cued up and ready to hit record when my favorite songs came on (I am dating myself!). I discovered Billy Joel, Elton John, The Beatles, Shaun Cassidy, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor, Whitney Houston, Madonna, and on and on. Later, I became obsessed with Sarah McLaughlin, Matthew Sweet, Phish, Sheryl Crow, and so many more! My first concert was Duran Duran at the Capital Center in the nosebleed seats. Even still, I was hooked, and I continue to be hooked to this day.

There have been many studies on the health benefits of music. Experiencing live music can reduce stress and anxiety by promoting the release of endorphins, the body's natural mood-enhancing hormones. And it cultivates a sense of community, as individuals from diverse backgrounds come together to celebrate a shared passion. The immersive nature of live music performances has also been shown to enhance cognitive function and memory retention, stimulating the brain and promoting neural pathways associated with learning and creativity. Music is, and will always be, a huge part of my life. Here are some upcoming concerts that I am looking forward to!

Saturday, April 13 – The Way Down Wanderers at Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis This is a super fun, high-energy, rootsy band! Bonus, it’s also an all-ages matinee! Wednesday, April 24 – Madison Cunningham & Juana Molina at Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis Madison Cunningham is a GRAMMY® nominated singer- songwriter with a “voice reminiscent of Stevie Nicks” (WXPN’s The Key). I discovered her a few years ago, and I am obsessed with her songwriting! Juana Molina is an Argentine singer-songwriter known for her distinctive sound which has been described as ambient, indie pop, and progressive folk. It’s an interesting pairing! Thursday, May 13 – Heart and Cheap Trick at CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore. This. I adore Heart, and adding Cheap Trick to this concert will be nothing short of amazing.

Thursday, June 27 – Sarah McLachlan: Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th Anniversary Tour at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia I, for one, cannot believe that it has been 30 years. WOW. Needless to say, I am counting down the days for this concert. Tuesday, June 18 – Corinne Bailey Rae at Maryland Hall in Annapolis Corinne Bailey Rae shot to stardom with her self-titled #1 U.K. debut album in 2006. Her live performance is not to be missed, and seeing her in the intimate Maryland Hall performance space will be a real treat. Saturday, August 10 – Honest Lee Soul at Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis With roots in soul, blues, funk, hip-hop, gospel, and rock, this Annapolis-based band puts on a dynamic show that will fill the room with an energy that will make you want to move!

I encourage you to consider the benefits of attending a live show, and remember to treat yourself to a concert now and again!
