Co-Create Initiative The Smithsonian’s Co-Create initiative brings together Asian and Pacific Islander educators, creatives, and others to tell stories about culture and heritage in a variety of ways — from cookbooks and zines to posters and maps. Learn more at apa.si.edu/co-create-initiative/.
Sixty percent of the world’s population lives in Asia, which is over four billion people. According to the U.S. Census, 20.6 million people in the United States identified as Asian, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander, which is 6% of the population. This May, learn about other cultures by attending local events, watching movies, or reading books that celebrate the role of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Several government agencies, including The Library of Congress, the National Archives and Records Administration, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Gallery of Art, the National Park Service, the Smithsonian Institution, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, contribute to asianpacificheritage.gov. Here are some of the highlights from this rich source of information: Islanders (AANHPI) in American history. NATIONAL ONLINE RESOURCES • The National Archives holds a wealth of material documenting the Asian and Pacific Islander experience, including primary sources related to the Chinese Exclusion Act, Japanese internment, and the annexation of Hawaii. • The Exhibits and Collections page displays collections at the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress, such as the Voices from the Veterans History Project, historic photographs, and National Park Service exhibits. COMMUNITY INITIATIVES AND CELEBRATIONS Sightlines: Chinatown and Beyond Visit the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center in Washington D.C., now through November 30 to view the special exhibit, Sightlines: Chinatown and Beyond . The exhibit highlights the physical and cultural impact of Asian Americans on Washington, D.C.

Anne Arundel County Public Library Closer to home, the Anne Arundel County Public Library will host several events for AANHPI Month. • Bonsai Basics Workshop Saturday, May 3, at 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm at Discoveries: The Library at the Mall Participants will learn from The Maryland Bonsai Association as they create a beginner bonsai tree. Registration opens on April 19 at 10:00 am.
