Breastfeeding Resources for Annapolis Parents
by Lauren N Thompson, MHS
Breastfeeding has numerous health benefits for parents and babies. Breast milk’s unique composition provides all the nutrients your baby needs for the first six months of life. Antibodies in breast milk protect your baby from infection and strengthen their immune system. For the birthing parent, breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast and uterine cancers and improves lifetime cardiovascular health. However, for many, breastfeeding is challenging. While health experts recommend parents breastfeed for six months exclusively, only 25% of babies in the United States are exclusively receiving breast milk at that time.1 Public health experts see the lack of parental leave and postpartum support as barriers to breastfeeding success.1 Luckily for us, there are several Annapolis-based lactation specialists, Lactation support is critical in the first few days and weeks following childbirth, particularly for first-time parents. But first, what are lactation specialists? Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) are trained providers who can support common feeding challenges like engorgement, latching, nipple care, pumping, and milk storage. International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) are the highest accredited healthcare lactation professionals. They are equipped to diagnose and treat common to more complex lactation issues like tongue ties, mastitis, oversupply or undersupply of breast milk, and other medical conditions impacting breastfeeding. Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center offers breastfeeding classes, lactation consultants on-site following delivery, a support phone line, and online and in-person support groups led by Kim Knight, IBCLC.
