Picture Perfect Style: Curating the Perfect Looks for Family Photos
by Gianna Nucci
Nothing defines a love-hate relationship quite like family photos. Between scheduling the photographer, coordinating outfits, and hoping everyone is on their best behavior, it can feel more like a chore than creating memories with loved ones. As a personal stylist, mothers often come to me to help alleviate the stress and time it takes to find outfits for their family photoshoots. Here are three things I take into consideration when curating the perfect looks: LOCATION & SEASON This one is pretty straightforward and plays a big role in determining the overall aesthetic. Once you determine the location, you can start honing in on the smaller details like the color palette and type of pieces needed for the photoshoot. For instance, you might not need shoes if you’re shooting on the beach or would need to focus on incorporating jackets if shooting outside in fall foliage. If you’re opting for something inside, like a studio, then you would consider the color of the backdrop, props, and lighting to dictate the details that follow. HOME DÉCOR This is not one everyone considers, but what’s the color palette of your home? If you plan on framing and hanging these pictures as décor then you might want to align the color palette of your family’s photo wardrobe to the colors you have around your house. You don’t have to match the colors exactly, but maybe dressing in bright red when you have a neutral home wouldn’t be the best option Cohesiveness can mean matching to many people, but there are ways to appear coordinated while allowing each family member to exude their style without being perfectly matched. There’s nothing wrong with opting for matching outfits if that’s your vibe, but sometimes pulling in similar details across the outfits and adding variation feels a bit more stylized. One simple detail to consider is color. For instance, if mom, whose outfit I recommend building the family’s wardrobe around, is wearing a floral dress, what colors within the flowers can you use to start breaking out for other family member’s looks? This is where you’ll want to revisit your location to assess what colors will be pulled in. You can also utilize texture as a cohesive tool - sweaters and corduroy for fall; linen and seersucker for the beach; velvet and satin for the holiday; and so on. aesthetically speaking. COHESIVENESS
Hopefully, these few tips will help create some ease in selecting your family’s photo wardrobe this season. Now, smile you’re ready for your close-up! LOCAL SHOPPING PICKS: Dream Baby Décor, Janie and Jack, Mason Mayes, Wrabyn
