USNA Commissioning Week 101:

by Judy Buddensnick

Commissioning Week is a week-long celebration in May at the United States Naval Academy (USNA) for the graduation and awarding of commissions to graduating midshipmen. It’s funny, I’ve been a Sponsor Mom for the United States Naval Academy for 25 years—close to 150 sponsored sons and daughters—but I’ve never rented out my home for Commissioning Week or any other reason for that matter. It seemed like a lot of work. Plus, I’d have to take a week’s vacation. However, after seeing some of the prices folks charge for rentals, I’m considering getting into the game too! In researching the idea, I’ve spoken with many friends who rent out their homes, as well as family and friends who have rented homes. It’s a lucrative business for homeowners and a fantastic, convenient way to enjoy the excitement of USNA events for family and friends. Here are some advantages for renters and homeowners that I’ve learned about ahead of Commissioning Week 2025: ADVANTAGES FOR RENTERS: 1. Proximity to Events: Many rental homes are located near USNA and downtown Annapolis, providing convenient access to ceremonies, parades, and celebrations on the Yard. 2.Enjoy the Space and Comfort: Homes typically offer more space, allowing families and friends to stay together. This is especially beneficial for larger groups. 3.It’s Cost-Effective: Renting a home can be more economical for the full eight days of Commissioning Week for larger groups. 4.Feels Like Home: Access to kitchens, laundry facilities, and private outdoor spaces enhances comfort and convenience. 5. Enjoy a Unique Local Experience: Staying in a private home allows you to experience the charm of our Annapolis neighborhoods and live like a local during your visit. 6. Flexibility: Rental homes typically come with flexible check-in/check-out times, accommodating the unique schedule of Commissioning Week events.
